For the most part, each these terms is more or less synonymous with what is frequently known as content marketing. But one word that I still hear bandied about from time to time, however, is advertorial. The truth is, though examples of advertorials are definitely existing within a strong content marketing strategy, I don’t believe they are 100% the same.
Is that seriously even a word? Advertorial defined:
Well first of all, yes, it is a real word (Webster added it back in the early 60s ). That alone should tell you that the idea of advertorial is nothing new, however, with the rise of the Internet, the definition of the advertorial needs to probably be tweaked a bit.
The idea years ago was to simply merge product advertisements with editorial content (quite literally, judging by the name). The idea made sense, as reader engagement in good quality editorial is so much higher than with typical ads. The execution, however, was a little tricky. In the pre-Internet days (and even after), organizations would aim to create articles aimed at their prospective customers with the goal of building up desire for their products, while still keeping the focus of the content away from the products themselves.
Confused? Allow me to explain further. Say you work for an IT company that sells backup and recovery software programs for desktop PCs. In this scenario, an advertorial example may possibly include a feature article on the risks and problems of not backing up your important data. The article could be created like a news feature, with quotes and testimonials from users who have fallen prey to the dangers of lost data. While the article doesn’t point out the precise product by name, it would have a link at the bottom directing visitors to additional details on desktop data protection, pointing to the company website.
While this is a rudimentary example, it can still be quite sneaky, right? Of course, the sticking point back in the old days was that in order to get anyone to actually go through advertorial content, vendors were beholden to editorial publications that would charge them the usual advertising fees. Mixing advertorial with other content formats (free ideas and tricks to help your viewers, case studies, etc.) and social media interaction will aid your business in building credibility and to become much more visible.
As always, content marketing at its heart is about building a relationship with your customers. Although advertorial content is editorial on the surface, it’s still an ad at heart.
